How to choose your home treadmill

A treadmill gives you a predictable, level surface and exact control over your speed, so you can walk on your schedule, in any weather.

Dr. Melody's take

  • Starting out? Choose handrails and a low starting speed. The 2.5 HP Walking Treadmill with Long Handrails starts at 0.5 mph. If you plan to walk at a comfortable pace, under 3.0 mph, a lower-power treadmill is all you need.
  • Ready to challenge your endurance? Choose more power and incline. If you want to raise your heart rate, walk faster or work on hills, a stronger motor with auto incline gives you room to grow. Try the 3.75HP Folding Treadmill with Auto Incline or the 4.75HP 2-in-1.
  • Want a sturdier machine for years of daily use? Step up to Echelon. The Stride-6S auto-folds and has a softer deck and a 10-inch touchscreen. The Stride-8s is light-commercial grade, with a 6.0 HP motor and a 20 x 60 inch deck.
  • Very unsteady on your feet? Start with a reformer instead. If you feel very unsteady, have a history of falls, or mainly want strength and balance work rather than cardio, a Pilates reformer is the better first step. It gives you a stable platform to build strength lying down, seated or kneeling.

Questions we hear most

How fast should a treadmill start?
For new or cautious walkers, look for a starting speed of 0.5 mph, so the belt moves slowly when you first step on.

Do I need auto incline?
Only if you want more challenge. For comfortable walking under 3.0 mph, a flat deck and a lower-power motor are enough.

Where should I put my treadmill?
On a hard, level floor. Several manufacturers say not to run their treadmills on carpet, because it can overheat the motor. Every listing shows the dimensions, and the folding models store upright.

What safety features matter on a treadmill?
A safety key that stops the belt if you step away, handrails you can reach easily, and controls you can read without leaning forward.
