How to choose your home reformer

A reformer is one of the most adaptable pieces of strength equipment you can bring home. The springs can assist you, resist you, or give you feedback, so the same machine works whether you're rebuilding strength or adding challenge. You can train your hips, legs, trunk and ankles lying down, seated or kneeling, then progress to standing work as you're ready.

Dr. Melody's take

  • New to reformer work? Start with the casa™. It's sturdy, a good size, and covers the reformer basics well. It also comes with 60 days of complimentary Pilates Project app access, so beginner workouts and ideas are ready from day one.
  • Short on space? Choose the foldable Luraush. It folds out of the way when you're done. It also comes with a Pilates box, so you can sit higher, get on and off more easily, and add variety to your workouts.
  • Ready for more? Choose a reformer with a tower. The MVe® Reformer and Tower and the Peak PilateSystem® are for people who already know the reformer basics and want deeper, more challenging workouts at home.

Questions we hear most

How much space do I need?
Every listing shows the dimensions. Leave room to step on and off from the side, and clear floor space around the frame. Not sure it fits? Call us before you buy.

Foldable or fixed frame?
A foldable reformer like the Luraush is the choice when you need the floor space back. A fixed frame like the casa™ stays set up and ready, which makes it easier to use every day.

What's a tower, and do I need one?
A tower adds a push-through bar and springs mounted above the reformer, for more exercise options. It's best once you're comfortable with the basics.

Is a reformer safe if my balance isn't great?
Start with exercises lying down, seated or kneeling, where the reformer gives you a stable platform. Standing exercises come later, with instruction. If you've fallen in the past year or have significant balance concerns, see a physical therapist first.
